My Reflection of Part One;
It was a marvelous start to the journey of these young adventurists! Meeting Raphael, Gardo, and especially Rat. I was actually surprised to find out of Gardo's shaven head later on and Rat's gruesome appearance which sent my heart plummeting.
The story is told in the perspective of Raphael and Gardo in Part One, which I find to be quite similar to the Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan!
Behala is a place I don't want to be anywhere near! What about you? I mean, can you picture yourself in those boys' positions? Raphael and Gardo's lives are pretty decent compared to Jun-Jun (Rat).
What really kept me riveted to the book is this very quote "When Smokey went down, there were nearly a hundred killed, and everyone knows some of those poor souls are still down there, down with the trash, turned into trash, rotting with the trash." Now that my friend is VERY POWERFUL. Any riveting moment you would like to showcase?
I admit, I felt the sensation of a heart attack when they were in Central and attempted to open their 'treasure' in hopes no one would track them. Hope I didn't ruin too much of part one, but I imagine we'd continue reading this suspenseful fiction. On to Part Two!

I really loved your quote, Brenda, about the mountain collapsing. I think the author does such a good job describing the landscape and the people and paints such a realistic picture of just how desperate these conditions are for the people of Behala. Born in trash, work in trash, die in trash, become trash... I actually was very turned off by the discussion of "stuppa". I couldn't even imagine working in such filth.
ReplyDeleteAnd you asked about riveting parts...I was so scared when the police came in to the town to talk to everyone about the special thing that was lost and Raphael's aunt said "Raphael found something, sir." I couldn't believe she did that! I am so relieved that the boys came up with a plan.
ReplyDeleteThank you(: Andy Mulligan is going on my favorite authors list. His writing is so original, and even though I might prefer more description (as Navid agreed with the locker scene) I know he writes in the perspective of 14 year old kids without much knowledge. So his writing is very adequate to his plot, which I applaud him for(:
